About the Rock Island Armory TAC Ultra Full Size HC 9mm 5" Barrel 17-Rounds

Product Overview

The Rock Island Armory TAC Ultra Full Size HC 9mm is a modern, high-capacity evolution of the classic 1911 platform, engineered for the serious shooter who demands both performance and value. Built on a full-size frame with a 5-inch barrel, this pistol is chambered in the popular and cost-effective 9mm Luger round. It distinguishes itself with a generous 17+1 round magazine capacity, a feature that expands its utility beyond traditional single-stack 1911s. This model is ideally suited for competitive shooting in divisions like USPSA Limited or Steel Challenge, where its sight system and capacity are significant advantages. It also serves as a formidable duty or home defense firearm, offering a familiar 1911 trigger in a soft-shooting, high-capacity package. The TAC Ultra HC is for the pragmatic shooter who appreciates time-tested design augmented with contemporary tactical features.

Key Features

• High-Capacity 9mm Chambering: Utilizes a double-stack frame to house 17 rounds of 9mm, offering substantial firepower and the benefits of reduced recoil and lower ammunition cost compared to .45 ACP.
• Enhanced Sight System: Features a highly visible green fiber optic front sight for rapid target acquisition, paired with an adjustable rear sight for precise windage and elevation corrections, essential for competition or varied range use.
• Durable Parkerized Finish: The matte gray parkerized finish provides a classic, non-reflective surface that is exceptionally resistant to corrosion and wear, ensuring long-term durability with minimal maintenance.
• Secure G10 Grips: Textured G10 grip panels offer a supremely secure and comfortable hold in all conditions, superior to traditional wood or plastic, providing essential control during rapid strings of fire.
• Full-Size 5" Barrel: The government-length 5-inch barrel contributes to a longer sight radius for improved accuracy and allows for optimal velocity and ballistic performance from the 9mm cartridge.
• 1911 Performance Trigger: Delivers the crisp, single-action break that the 1911 platform is renowned for, providing a consistent and predictable trigger press critical for accuracy.

Performance & Applications

This pistol's design caters to specific, demanding roles where its feature set translates directly to on-target performance. For the competitive shooter, the Rock Island Armory TAC Ultra is a ready-made platform for action pistol sports. The fiber optic front sight pops against steel targets or cardboard, the adjustable rear allows for perfect zeroing with your preferred load, and the 17-round capacity means fewer reloads during stages. The reliable 1911 action and excellent trigger provide a competitive edge without a custom gun price tag.

As a dedicated home defense firearm, it offers a compelling combination of capacity, manageable recoil, and proven mechanical reliability. The 9mm chambering is effective with modern defensive ammunition while being easier to control for follow-up shots compared to larger calibers. The robust construction and parkerized finish ensure the pistol will function reliably if called upon, and the intuitive manual safety is familiar to those trained on the 1911 platform. It is also an excellent choice for intensive range training, where its soft shooting characteristics and affordable 9mm ammunition allow for extended practice sessions to build fundamental skills.
