Buying a gun online in Wisconsin and hunting rifles for Wisconsin game
Short answer: You can buy a rifle online, but it must ship to a licensed dealer (FFL) near you, and you finish the paperwork there. In Wisconsin, the handgun statute (Wis. Stat. 175.35) has no fixed waiting period in its text. For hunting, you need the right DNR license for your season, so check the current DNR rules before you pick a rifle.
How buying a gun online works
- You pick the gun and pay online.
- We ship it to a licensed dealer you choose in your state. We do not ship guns to homes.
- At the dealer you show ID and fill out ATF Form 4473. The dealer runs the background check (NICS or the state check).
- If you pass, you take the gun home. If you do not pass, the dealer cannot transfer it.
Federal law (27 CFR 478.99) says a licensed dealer may not sell a gun or ammunition to anyone they know or have reason to believe is under 18. For handguns and other guns that are not rifles or shotguns, the age is 21. So the federal minimum is 18 for a rifle or shotgun and 21 for a handgun, bought from a dealer. The same section also limits sales to people who live in another state, so use a dealer in your own state.
Wisconsin rules (as of the official sources)
| Topic | What the official source says |
|---|---|
| Handgun waiting period | Wis. Stat. 175.35 contains no fixed waiting period. The dealer may not hand over the handgun until the buyer shows photo ID, completes the state notification form, the dealer asks the Department of Justice (DOJ) for a firearms restrictions record search, and the dealer gets an approval number. The dealer pays a $10 fee per search and may pass it on to the buyer. |
| Delayed checks | If the search is unclear and DOJ needs more time, it must tell the dealer as soon as practicable, and no later than 5 working days after the request. This is a deadline for DOJ, not a waiting period set on the dealer. |
| Long guns | Section 175.35 covers handguns only. Long guns still go through the federal 4473 and background check at the dealer. |
| Long guns in vehicles | The DNR says long guns must be unloaded when placed, possessed or transported in a vehicle. They do not have to be cased, but a concealed long gun within reach of anyone in the vehicle is illegal. |
Laws change. Check current rules with the Wisconsin DOJ, the state DNR or your dealer.
Hunting basics from the Wisconsin DNR
- You need a license to hunt deer. A gun deer license covers firearm or airgun hunting. Archery and crossbow have their own licenses. You also need a valid, unfilled harvest authorization.
- You can buy licenses in the Go Wild app or at license sale locations.
- Hunter education: the DNR says anyone can get a mentored-only hunting license and hunt without first taking a hunter education course. A mentored hunter must stay within arm's reach of a licensed mentor. Check the DNR for the full hunter education rules.
- Hunters 17 and younger get a junior antlerless authorization with each gun or archery license. Only the person it was issued to may fill it.
- Deer harvests must be registered through GameReg by 5 p.m. the day after the deer is recovered.

Choosing a hunting rifle
Ammunition and firearm rules for deer can change. Check current rules with the DNR hunting regulations, or ask your dealer, before you buy ammunition. In general, pick a rifle you can shoot well, in a common cartridge with easy-to-find ammo, and practice at a range before the season.
FAQ
Can I have a rifle shipped to my house in Wisconsin?
No. It ships to a licensed dealer, and you complete Form 4473 and the background check there.
Is there a waiting period for handguns in Wisconsin?
The text of Wis. Stat. 175.35 sets none. The dealer waits for a DOJ approval number, and DOJ must tell the dealer within 5 working days if it needs more time. This is the text as of the source. Laws change, so confirm with your dealer.
Do I need hunter education to hunt deer?
The DNR says a mentored-only license lets anyone hunt without first taking a course, with a mentor within arm's reach. Check the DNR for the rules that apply to you.
